The word wakonse (wuh·kon·seh) comes from the language of the Lakota Sioux. It translates variously as to influence, to inspire, and to teach. Wakonse captures the inspirational nature of teaching and learning, conveying that learning and teaching are intertwined--that we, as teachers, learn as much from our students and our surroundings as we hope our students learn from us.
The Wakonse Fellowship in Arizona brings together faculty, teaching and learning professionals from Arizona's postsecondary institutions who recognize and are devoted to the inspirational aspect of the teaching and learning process. Wakonse is an organization of individuals dedicated to promoting and sharing with colleagues the excitement and satisfaction of teaching in higher education.
